Glasses
In the early stages of keratoconus, many people can manage with glasses. As the condition progresses, more and more distortion is noticeable. This can take the form of streaking, blurring, shadowing and multiple images (not to be confused with double vision that goes away if you close one eye)

When these visual effects become too much to cope with, then this is the time to look at trying contact lenses, which smooth out the distortions. However, glasses still play an important role, as contact lenses cannot be worn all the time and a back up pair of glasses, even if they do not give wonderful vision, can often be better than nothing at all!
The eye examination
The distortions that make it difficult to see also make it difficult for an optometrist to test your eyes. The instruments that are used to test eyes are often "confused" by the distorting effect, so getting the right pair of glasses can be a challenge!
